Unlike women who have tons of options like makeup and concealer to hide skin imperfections, men are left to show with what they got. For this reason, men need to take extra care of their physical appearance.
Genetics may be responsible for our skin and hair 90% of our physical appearance has to do with how we take care of ourselves. In other words, we have greater chances of great skin depending on what we do with it.
Dr. Doris Gay, dermatologist and medical journalist in New York City, shares her thought on the simple things every man can do to improve their skin and keep it healthy.
Apply sun protection daily
It may not be as sunny as a tropical island in your city or town but guess what? You still need to put on some sunscreen. Sunscreen provides skin an extra protective layer against the harmful UV rays from the sun, which may cause dark spots and more serious problems like skin cancer. It is advised to use a sunscreen with SPF 30 or more. By continuously doing this, you are reducing the skin aging process by 24%.
Reduce sodium intake
It isn’t easy to reduce salt in your diet but there is a need to do so. Reducing sodium intake is especially essential if you are concerned about your skin and hair. Salt pulls out water from your cells where it is needed. You can also reduce the presence of sodium in your body by drinking lots of water.
Proper hair loss solutions
Hair loss is a sign of skin aging. Sometimes it results to thinning or balding. Although balding can be mostly attributed to genetics, there are also times when it is a result of poor health. If you reach this stage, a simple shampoo and conditioner just doesn’t cut it anymore. You need to consult a dermatologist to find a better solution.
Some supplements are bad – that’s why you need to be very careful about the supplements you take. Extreme dieters often treat supplements as a replacement for food when it should be an addition to food. This is because there are important vitamins and minerals that you just can’t get with a single meal. An example is Vitamin D, which is very rare to find in regular meals.
Eat a healthy diet and exercise
Nothing beats a healthy diet and exercise. It is the best way to have great skin. Perspiration through exercise is one way for us to flush out toxins and dirt from the skin. Make it a habit to consume food with deep colors like pomegranates and berries. You can also have healthy fats from avocados, walnuts and fish.
